The Council of Candidates Union has rejected President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s call for talks on the situation in the country.
The Somali president forwarded the request to the Union of Candidates, sending envoys to the presidents of Galmudug and HirShabelle.
Reports say the president has asked to meet with a committee from the Union of Candidates to discuss the election, especially the difficult debate over the two-year extension.
The sources added that President Farmajo’s call was aimed specifically at former presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Sources say the Union of Candidates boycotted the meeting, recognizing President Farmajo as out of office and in office illegally.
Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor), the President of Galmudug, will reportedly try again to bring together some of the leaders of the Federal Government and members of the Union of Candidates.
Although the political situation in the country has been volatile in recent times, it has been exacerbated by the two-year extension of the presidency and parliament, a time when calls are being made to political stakeholders.
